First edition. The Book of Tahkemoni (The Book of Wisdom or the Heroic) is widely regarded as the crowning jewel of Hebrew maqama literature, or rhymed prose interspersed with verse. The author, generally considered to be the last major Hebrew poet of Spain, displays great scope, moving from prayers to tales of battlefield carnage, from philosophic reflection to droll satire targeting the pompous, the ignorant, and the mean. The translation captures the drama, wit, and satire of the original in a contemporary English that displays vigour and a sense of fun. With full scholarly apparatus, explanatory notes, detailed annotations, and analyses of each chapter. Plus a substantial Afterword which sums up major features discussed in the analyses.

19 CHIARINI, L’Abbé L. A. Théorie du Judaïsme: Appliquée a la Réforme des Israélites de Tous les Pays de l’Europe, et Servant en Même Temps d’Ouvrage Préparatoire a la Version du Talmud de Babylone. Volumes I-II. Paris, Barbezat, 1830.

- - First edition. Luigi Chiarini, Italian abbot, 1789-1832. In 1826 appointed professor of history and oriental languages at the University of Warsaw. At a time when anti-Semitic onslaughts on Judaism were directed primarily against the Talmud, Chiarini published in 1830, in Paris, his voluminous work, “Théorie du Judaïsme” in which he announced a forthcoming translation of the Talmud. “Théorie du Judaïsme” advocated a translation which will be generally accessible, a demand made by anti-Semitic Christian theologians. In this respect Chiarini’s work, pervaded with some of the traditional prejudices against the Jews, was seen as a tool which could facilitate further anti-Semitic attacks. “Théorie du Judaïsme” though showing also a sincere concern for the spiritual and material welfare of the Jews and a desire to improve their condition, was widely criticized and caused considerable discussion. Of Chiarini’s planned six-volume translation of the Talmud, only two volumes appeared. Rare. OCLC lists a copy in NYPL, and a copy each in Cambridge, Carolina, and Michigan University libraries. Another copy in Trinity College.

- - First edition. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR “P. L. B. Drach” in ink on verso of half-title (“Propriété de l’Éditeur”). Marrano Paul Louis Bernard Drach (David), (1791, Strasburg - 1868, Rome), a Talmudic scholar, Grand-Rabbi, a well-known converted Jew. In 1823 he renounced Judaism in the presence of Archbishop Quélen, was baptized, and received his first Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation. In 1827 appointed librarian of the Propaganda in Rome, an office he held until his death. Rosenthal, in his “Convertitenbilder” writes: “The conversion of this learned Jew is undoubtedly one of the most important conversions effected by the grace of God during this century in France. It became the source of salvation to many of his coreligionists.” Of Drach’s numerous writings, “Lettres d’un rabbin converti aux Israélites, ses frères” is the most important. Highly anti-Semitic, it incriminates the Jews as practicioners of ritual murder. “The zeal of these Rabbis goes as far as dedicating to death all those who follow the doctrine of the Trinity, and consequently all Christian Israelites,” Drach writes. In his “Harmonie entre l’église et la synagogue” (Paris, 1844) he even asserts that the Jews of Damascus had been responsible for the ritual murder of the Capuchin Fr. Thomas in 1840, and that their guilt had been established beyond doubt. Exceedingly scarce. OCLC records 2 copies only.

Uncut in the original printed wrappers, with a publisher’s catalogue printed on lower wrapper; wraps frayed along edges, corner chipped, spine neatly reinforced with matching paper. In a very good condition (old institutional stamps and label), internally very clean and neat.

- - First edition, signed by the author. Eugen Karl Dühring (1833-1921), German philosopher and economist. Became blind at an early age. Lecturer at the Berlin University. His detailed scholarly discussion of the Jewish question as a racial and moral one is among the most important contributions to the history of anthropology and culture in the distinction it makes between the Jews and the other Semites. Anti-Semitism refers only to the Jews, a specific branch of the Semitic race, “the most vicious minting of the entire Semitic race,” and not to all the members of that race. It is Dühring’s “Die Judenfrage” that has moved Theodor Herzl to study the phenomenon of the “Jewish Question” with increasing intensity, and to publish his “Der Judenstaat” five years later.

Octavo. Pp. 123. Errata slip tipped-in. Footnotes. Hardcover, contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards. In fine condition. (Old institutional stamps, shelf label; light foxing.) Crisp, practically unused copy.

- - First edition. A highly anti-Semitic treatise which aims to prove the connection between the Talmud and the practice of ritual murder among the Jews. It uses the murder of the 14 year old Hungarian girl Esther Solymossy as its point of departure. A Jew by the name of Joseph Scharf was brought to trial in Tisza-Eszlar in Hungary for presumably having murdered Solymossy in a Jewish ritual. The trial evoked much agitation throughout Europe and a dramatic rise in antisemitism. The work is believed to be the testimony of an “insider”, the convert Neofitus Moldavisch, a Jewish Rabbi turned Greek Orthodox Priest. The original work was written in Greek. It later appeared in Italian, and from this version translated into Dutch by F. J. Poelhekke, Chaplain in Leiden and Haarlem, who preferred to call himself “the writer of ‘Laster of Misdaad?’”. Very scarce.

Both the first and the second books are believed to be the testimony of an “insider”, the convert Neofitus Moldavisch, a Jewish Rabbi turned Greek Orthodox Priest. The original work was written in Greek. It later appeared in Italian, and from this version translated into Dutch by F. J. Poelhekke, Chaplain in Leiden and Haarlem, who preferred to call himself “the writer of ‘Laster of Misdaad?’”. The third book, published 7 years later, is written by Dr. August Rohling, a theology professor at the University of Prague, author of the anti-Semitic standard-work “Der Talmudjude” (Münster, 1871, and often reprinted). It was arranged and enlarged by Max de Lamarque. It is an anti-Semitic pseudo scientific study, drawing on many similar publications. Still, it offers “a reward of ten-thousand franks to whom that can prove false even one of the 300 claims” that the book brings. Very scarce indeed.

Het Oude en Niewe [nieuwe] Verbond aen een geschakelt in de geschiedenissen der Joden en der aangrenzende volkeren, sedert het verval der koninkryken van Israel en Juda tot de komst van Jezus Kristus. In twee deelen. Amsterdam, Isaak Tirion, 1731.

Two parts in one volume. Eight books to the first part, nine to the second. Folio. Pp. xii-xxii (partly set in double columns), 32 (list of chronological events), 33-36 with a Privilege by the Staten van Holland), 1552 numbered columns, (33) index set in three columns, (4) concordance, (2) index of Greek and Latin authors, (1) errata. Half-title, large allegorical frontispiece by van Mieris, finely engraved by van Bleyswyk, with a Privilege of Joannes vander Linden of Leiden engraved at bottom, dated 1729, title-page printed in red and black, with large, handsome engraved device, title to the second part. Plus seven double-page maps, one of which is a folding plan of Jerusalem Temple with extended legend in letterpress on two text panels, all seven finely engraved on copper and tipped-in. With fine copper engraving of the Holy Altar and one table to the text. Large engraved initial to head of each book, followed by a smaller one; tail-pieces. Footnotes, side-notes, appendices. Hardcover, contemporary full calf, spine in seven compartments between gilt-tooled raised bands, gilt morocco label in 2nd compartment, remainder with central gilt-tooled ornaments, each within gilt ornamental frame; gilt-tooled bevelled edges; all edges sprinkled. In a very fine internal condition. (Leather shows light signs of wear, with a small chip at head of spine and a short split at head of lower joint, but overall very good; gutter after blank prelim split.) Exceptionally well preserved interior with crisp leaves and a crisp, practically unused set of maps. Overall an excellent copy.

- - Second edition. The first edition was printed in 1723 by Joannes vander Linden of Leiden, who first intended to publish the work at least in a decent quarto but ended with a two-volume, rather thick and clumsy octavo (he even contemplated a three-volume set but gave up the idea). In 1729 he decided to sell the publishing rights to Isaak Tirion of Amsterdam, who in 1731 published this edition, the first (and last) to be printed in royal folio, measuring 41 x 28cm. Tirion could now reset the work in elegant and practical double-column format, add a large, magnificant frontispiece, and allow the handsome maps the freedom to remain unfolded, double-page generous folios.
