BRAND NEW. Virgin copy, not yet traded. 8vo. Pp. 424. With 110 pages of notes, index. Wrappers.

But there have been many other important tribunals that have not been as successful, and which have been largely left out of today’s debates about international justice. This timely book brings them in, using primary documents to examine the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, the Armenian genocide, World War II, and the recent wars in the former Yugoslavia. It offers an unprecedented look at the politics behind international war crimes tribunals, combining analysis with investigative reporting and a broad historical perspective. 21 DONOHUE, Laura K. Counter-Terrorist Law and Emergency Powers in the United Kingdom, 1922-2000. Dublin, Irish Academic Press, 2001.

BRAND NEW. Virgin copy, not yet traded. 8vo. Pp. xxvi, 422. With list of acts, tables, 3 appendices, notes, bibliography, index. Hardcover, black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, with dust-jacket.

First edition. Examines in detail the introduction and exercise of extraordinary powers to counter Northern Irish political violence in both Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Like the Northern Irish statutes, the 1939 Prevention of Violence (Temporary Provisions) Act was intended to operate for a limited period. Although the IRA’s mainland bombing campaign ceased within a year of the statute’s introduction, Westminster did not repeal it until 1973. The following year, largely in response to the Birmingham bombings, the British government reintroduced the powers of the 1939 PVA in the 1974 Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act. The book focuses on the evolution of these measures and their gradual entrenchment in the British constitution. It suggests that characteristics of emergency legislation itself, the historical context into which such measures were introduced, the setting of boundaries within which the Government had a significant amount of leeway, and the establishment of a hierarchy of rights, all contributed to the permanent adoption of emergency law. “...a complete tour d’horizon on the subject... For those who are students of British law and its role in the protection of people, property and the State, this work will prove to be an invaluable reference and guide. It should also appeal to the social historian.” ISBN:#0716526875 ISBN:#0 7165 2687 5

42 HOLTZMAN, Avi. The War Trilogy. Reno, Nevada Museum of Art, 1997.

Virgin copy, not yet traded. New. Large oblong 8vo. Pp. 47. Photographic work. With 25 full-page colour plates (inc. cover), and 53 thumbnail halftone images. Pictorial stiff wrappers, stapled as issued. Multiple copies available.

- - First edition. Exhibition catalogue, published to coincide with the first exhibition of The War Trilogy in its North American and European tour between 1997 and 2000. With an introduction by Steven S. High, Director of the Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, and two essays: “No Neutral Ground: The Political Landscapes of Avi Holtzman,” by Frits Gierstberg, Curator at the National Institute for Photography in the Netherlands, and “Frames of Conflict,” by William L. Fox, poet and arts writer based in LA, California. As the work of some of the New Topographic photographers in America of the 70s, Holtzman’s uninflected long look at the Israeli landscape tends to neutralize the mythic and high romantic connotations of “the holy land”, forcing the viewer to confront the insidious power of politics over nature and history over beauty. It is a powerful, general condemnation of the war’s consequences - the complete militarization of the land. Holtzman’s camera, charting the geography of destruction, has captured a painful insight into how the very land itself has become a victim of war. The 53 photographs of The War Trilogy consist the most in-depth single artist representation in the Altered Landscape Collection, a premier repository for contemporary photographs on the environment. “...We place Holtzman’s work next to that of other photographers in the collection - the ‘Bravo 20’ photographs by [Richard] Misrach, the ‘Nuclear Landscapes’ of Peter Goin, and Lewis Baltz’s deadpan coverage of the rural West’s transformation into rootless suburbia - and it’s clear that we need the view through all these different frames in order to understand where we live.” (from the Catalogue).

43 HOLTZMAN, Avi. With essays by Frits Gierstberg and William L. Fox. The War Trilogy. Reno, Nevada Museum of Art, 1997.

BRAND NEW. Virgin copy, not yet traded. Large oblong 8vo. Pp. 47. Photographic work. With 25 full-page colour plates (inc. cover), and 53 thumbnail halftone images. Pictorial stiff wrappers, stapled as issued. Multiple copies available.

First edition. “...We place Holtzman’s work next to that of other photographers in the collection - the ‘Bravo 20’ photographs by [Richard] Misrach, the ‘Nuclear Landscapes’ of Peter Goin, and Lewis Baltz’s deadpan coverage of the rural West’s transformation into rootless suburbia - and it’s clear that we need the view through all these different frames in order to understand where we live.” - William L. Fox. First edition.

The IJssellinie was operational from 1952 until 1963, and was a fully guarded military zone until 1958. During the Cuba crisis the first phase of the inundation-plan was executed; the floodgates of the Afsluitdijk were closed, causing the water in the IJsselmeer and IJssel to rise. But the IJssellinie never had a reason to fully prove itself, and the Dutch government decided to dismantle it in 1963. Very well documented and richly illustrated. Exceedingly scarce.

88 STONE, David. First Reich: Inside the German Army During the War with France. London, Brassey’s, 2002.

Virgin copy, not yet traded. New. 8vo. Pp. 320. Plus 30 unnumbered pages of illustrations, printed on different paper, bound in the text. With 30 full-page plates, reproducing original paintings and drawings; notes, 4 appendices, index. Hardcover, dark crimson cloth, spine lettered in gilt, with pictorial dust-jacket.

First edition. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 enabled Bismarck, the Prussian Chancellor, to achieve his lifelong objective of creating, for the first time, a truly German Empire. In practice, this was a “First German Reich.” The bloody war established new precedents for the conduct of warfare. The French lost more than 150,000 men, and saw the same number wounded; the German forces suffered less, but still sustained significant losses. Students of military history will find here fresh and authoritative coverage of this landmark European conflict, with detailed description of the war battles and participants, especially the German Army and its organization, equipment, uniforms, and activities. With an impressive illustrations section, depicting in wonderful detail battle scenes, uniforms, and portraits. The jacket illustration is the beautiful “Attaque d’un Convoi par des Cuirassiers Prussiens” by Edouard Detaille (1882), depicting a typical heroic, self-sacrificing cavalry charge against highly accurate rifle fire.
