Doepler, bound by the firm H. Sperling, Berlin, upper board richly gilt decorated and heightened with pink and black dyes, spine gilt, lower board blind panelled, elaborate gilt decorated endpapers by E. Doepler, all edges gilt. In overall fine condition. Save for minor blemished to cloth and to occasional leaf, an excellent copy.

- - First edition. A beautiful rendition of military life, army and navy, exquisitely produced. The plates, by various artists, are the result of using compound metal line blocks. Using a a complicated and delicate process, now obsolete, which was invented in the early 1850’s by Firmin Gillot, the line block could be created by transfer, freeing the draughtsman from the restricting discipline of the graver used in wood-engraving. This book is distinguished by the early addition of colour to this method, using multiple blocks, coloured by mechanical tints, to produce the rich, dense, chromatic plates whose quality surpasses that of their contemporaries.

6 HOLTZMAN, Avi. With essays by Frits Gierstberg and William L. Fox. The War Trilogy. [Autograph Copy]. Reno, Nevada Museum of Art, 1997.

BRAND NEW. Virgin copy, not yet traded. Large oblong 8vo. Pp. 47. Photographic work. With 25 full-page colour plates (inc. cover), and 53 thumbnail halftone images. Pictorial stiff wrappers, stapled as issued.

Autograph copy, signed by the artist. First edition. Exhibition catalogue, published to coincide with the first exhibition of The War Trilogy in its North American and European tour between 1997 and 2000. With an introduction by Steven S. High, Director of the Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, and two essays: “No Neutral Ground: The Political Landscapes of Avi Holtzman,” by Frits Gierstberg, Curator at the National Institute for Photography in the Netherlands, and “Frames of Conflict,” by William L. Fox, poet and arts writer based in LA, California. As the work of some of the New Topographic photographers in America of the 70s, Holtzman’s uninflected long look at the Israeli landscape tends to neutralize the mythic and high romantic connotations of “the holy land”, forcing the viewer to confront the insidious power of politics over nature and history over beauty. It is a powerful, general condemnation of the war’s consequences - the complete militarization of the land. Holtzman’s camera, charting the geography of destruction, has captured a painful insight into how the very land itself has become a victim of war. The 53 photographs of The War Trilogy consist the most in-depth single artist representation in the Altered Landscape Collection, a premier repository for contemporary photographs on the environment. “...We place Holtzman’s work next to that of other photographers in the collection - the ‘Bravo 20’ photographs by [Richard] Misrach, the ‘Nuclear Landscapes’ of Peter Goin, and Lewis Baltz’s deadpan coverage of the rural West’s transformation into rootless suburbia - and it’s clear that we need the view through all these different frames in order to understand where we live.” - William L. Fox. OCLC 38859085, locating 9 copies; in George Eastman House, University of California Berkeley, Smithsonian Institution, Ringling Museum of Art, Wellesley College, University of New Mexico, Virginia Museum Library, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, National Art Library Victoria & Albert Museum. KVK adds a copy in Det Kongelige Bibliotek, Denmark.

14 MONTORGUEIL, G. (Texte). Aquarelles de JOB [Jean Onfroy de Breville]. Murat. Murat a l’auberge paternelle; l’Engagé volontaire; Le cavalier d’Aboukir; Le beau-frère de Napoléon; Le roi de Naples; La garde-robe d’un héros; Un roi en haillons; Le drame du pizzo. Paris, Hachette, (1903).

Oblong crown quarto. Unpaginated. With 40 full-page fine colour chromotypograph plates by JOB, printed by Firmin-Didot of Paris. Title page printed in copper-brown and black; vignette illustration to title. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher’s quarter cloth over boards, a full-size plate nicely set within gilt frame on upper board, boards bit soiled, gilt title, corner-tips bit chafed. In about fine condition. A lovely copy in a very strong and tight binding, with a spotless set of plates, superbly reproduced and overall very fresh.

- - First edition of this format. Rare. OCLC records just one copy (Stanford University) of this 1903 edition. Joachim Murat (1767-1815), one of Napoleon’s best marshals. Married Napoleon’s youngest sister Caroline in 1800. Was at the head of Napoleon’s armies during the invasion of Spain in 1807 and was made King of Naples the following year. Commanded the cavalry during the invasion of Russia and the whole of the Grande Armée after Napoleon’s departure. After Napoleon’s final defeat in 1815, Murat was executed, allegedly saying to the firing squad: “Spare my face, aim at the heart”. The total of individual illustrations in this book, including cover, sums up to 43 (one plate is double-page; one plate depicts 4 individual illustrations). Contrary to the prevailing assumption, the superb illustrations in this book, and indeed in all Montorgueil and Job’s print productions, are not chromolithographs. At the end of the 19th century the term “chromotypograph”, implying colour printed from raised metal, as type is, was used for colour prints which made use of metal relief blocks. It is indeed the process used in this book; the colour plates were printed from etched metal blocks, a relief method rather than planographic.

A fine example of a charming classic, Major General F. J. van Lier’s copy, with his entry and signature to front flyleaf. Printed by Paul Dupont, Paris. Contrary to the prevailing assumption, the superb illustrations in this book, and indeed in all Montorgueil and Job’s print productions, are not chromolithographs. 16 MONTORGUEIL, Georges. Imagé par JOB [J. O. de Breville]. La Cantinière. France, Son Histoire. Paris, Charavay, Mantoux, Martin, n.d.

Folio. Unpaginated. Title-page printed in red and black. Elaborately illustrated initial and head-piece. Richly illustrated throughout with splendid chromotypograph plates of fine quality, many of which are full-page, some double-page. Printed on heavy paper. Hardcover, original pictorial cloth. All edges coloured red. Fair copy. (Spine worn, inner hinges split/strengthened; binding loose, marginal tear- or two neatly mended.) Overall internally clean and complete; plates and illustrations are in a very good condition.

- - The plates in this particular edition, printed by E. Charaire, Paris, are worth pursuing. They are remarkably richer in tone, and have a fuller body than those in the other editions. Variations of colour are well expressed, and even minute shifts in hues scale and density are very well visible, something which can not be truly said of the result of other printers’ efforts to reproduce this work. A rather used copy of a charming classic, and priced accordingly.
